The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine

The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine (Cardiology, Angiology, Intensive Care Medicine) represents one of three departments of internal medicine. Over 5,000 patients per year are cared for on an inpatient basis, either on one of three regular wards or on the intensive care unit. Our institution provides evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients with ischemic heart disease, congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathies, cardiac arrhythmias, hypertension, arterial disorders, and venous thromboembolism.

The Division is well recognized and has gained wide acceptance as a regional centre for cardiovascular medicine. A full-time faculty of nine cardiologists and angiologists provides elective, urgent or emergency consultations as necessary. Non-invasive testing includes routine and 24-hour electrocardiography, telemetric loop recorders, transthoracic and transesophageal echo-cardiography with color-flow Doppler, strain and 3D-echocardiography, pharmacologic stress echocardiography and both venous and arterial color-flow ultrasonography with Doppler. The Division also provjdes the full range of cardiac catheterization, angioplasty and stent placement. For high risk procedures and in the case of cardiogenic shock, Impella heart pumps are implanted. In the field of rhythm disorders, we offer invasive cardiac electrophysiology studies and ablation including pulmonary vein isolation. We perform about 500 procedures per year in cardiac rhythm device therapy, pacemakers, cardiac resynchronisation therapy-systems and implantable cardiac defibrillators. Cardiac contractility modulation-systems are implanted fpr the treatment of chronic systolic heart failure.

The Division works in close collaboration with the Department of Surgery (vascular surgery), with the Department of Radiology (non-invasive cardiovascular imaging -computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) and with the Institute of Nuclear Medicine (exercise and pharmacologic myocardial perfusion imaging).

The Center for Cardiac Rehabilitation is part of Marien Aktiv and allows for special rehabilitation care on an outpatient basis for patients who suffered myocardial infarction or underwent cardiac surgery, e.g. after coronary artery bypass grafting or heart valve replacement.

Up to now, we have a teaching affiliation with the University of Marburg. Students of the University are educated in their last year of studies.

In 2018 the universities of Siegen and Bonn are starting to train medical students in a cooperation and to establish the Campus Siegen. Marien Kliniken are one of four teaching hospitals in Siegen enabling patient care in this new academic school of medicine.

After completion of studies, physicians may enter our training program to acquire the German board certification for internal medicine, cardiology and intensive care medicine.
